An end title sanctimoniously advises viewers not to try to duplicate the movie’s “dangerous” driving scenes. Anderson, the new movie abandons the provocative, grisly/satiric premise of the original, whose points-for-killing-bystanders. Starring: Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Ian McShane. The level of violence is consistently revolting. A man wrongfully convicted of murder agrees to compete in a grueling three-day race against fellow inmates in exchange for his freedom. As for Statham, his body (frequently exposed) is fearsome, and he confidently struts through the picture. One hopes she was well paid for this slumming expedition. 1 The film was released on DVD and digitally on October 2, 2018. Death Race: Beyond Anarchy is a 2018 American science fiction action film directed by Don Michael Paul. Ian McShane is entertaining as the worldly driving coach. Death Race is not only a race to the finish line, but a battle pitting car against car. The cast is a little tonier than you usually find in such programrs. (Or is it the studio bosses who mandate all this frantic cutting, fearing that audiences will tune out of a chase scene that isn’t sliced and diced to a fare-thee-well?) Like so many contemporary directors, Anderson pumps up the volume and edits with a machete to disguise the fact that he can’t stage a complicated action scene with visual clarity. It’s fast-paced, but it isn’t really well made. The best you can say about the movie is that it isn’t boring. Fast and Fierce: Death Race is a movie for those who miss what The Fast and Furious franchise used to be about: illegal street racing. With some gnarly stunts and great performances, Fast and Fierce: Death Race shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Of course, she has no intention of honoring her pledge, but she underestimates Ames, who knows how to kick butt as well as burn rubber. This ride in an underground race is both fun and intense. Anderson quickly sets up the premise: Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) is framed for the murder of his wife and sent to a maximum-security prison, where the devious warden (Joan Allen) offers him a chance at freedom if he wins the death race against the prison’s most sadistic killers.
